Unaccompanied minors
Over the years in working with displaced children we have witnessed countless unaccompanied minors roaming the camps and streets alone. These minors embark on the dangerous journey to safety all by themselves, without their parents. Often they are criminalised or seen as dangerous, but in reality they are just young adults in need of understanding and assistance. Their whole life is still ahead of them.
Over time, we have engaged youth in various activities, such as painting costumes and props for our shows. But for the longest time we have wished to do a project dedicated just to them. And now is the time to make it happen!
Dreaming of a better future
Last year, we started a pilot project for minors in an emergency shelter location in Arnhem. We worked with fashion, photography, and various art forms. The project ended with an exhibition, curated by the minors themselves, to enable them to show their work with pride.
We got to know the minors through their dreams. For example, they created a collage about everything they love and who they would like to be in the future. And what did we find: dreams are universal and the arts are an amazing tool to express the inner world. It’s so special to see time and again how we can meet each other in creativity and art.
Netherlands & Greece
Now it’s time to really launch this project! This year, in addition to our regular projects for children, we will visit unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands and Greece.
In the Netherlands we will be doing two projects: one in the summer on a location in Arnhem and one in the winter break. The choice for the holiday breaks is because the structure school brings falls away and boredom and despair are oftentimes a reality for the minors.
Additionally, this summer, we will travel back to Serres where many young refugees stay, and where we will also implement our program for young people!
